Do Women Have To Be Naked To Get Into The Met Museum?
“Guerrilla Girls: 'You Have to Question What You See'“ — Tate, 2018, 6:57 — https://youtu.be/8uKg7hb2yoo
A profile on the feminist art group Guerrilla Girls. Look into your nearest art museum or gallery and try to find figures about the gender composition of the artists featured. Even today, women are severely underrepresented in the art world and it is not the result of insufficient skill. What other privileged groups do you think are overrepresented in art institutions? How can we make art more inclusive and representative of the human experience?
From the video’s description: The Guerrilla Girls are an anonymous group of feminist, female artists devoted to fighting sexism and racism within the art world. The group formed in New York City in 1985 with the mission of bringing gender and racial inequality into focus within the greater arts community. The group employs culture jamming in the form of posters, books, billboards, and public appearances to expose discrimination and corruption. To remain anonymous, members don gorilla masks and use pseudonyms that refer to deceased female artists.
